New York
to Madrid : The following airlines
fly direct from NY to Madrid ; Iberia (tel. 212-644-8841), American,
Delta and United Airlines. Also, AirEuropa ( www.air-europa.com tel,
212-921-2381) and Continental fly from Newark , NJ directly to
Madrid (AirEuropa everyday except Wednesday and Sunday and Continental
daily). AirPlus Comet ( www.aircomet.com
tel. 1-800-234-1700) flies weekly non-stops to Madrid from JFK.
Madrid to La Coruña :
Iberia is the sole carrier that flies to La Coruña . Iberia
has several flights daily to and from Madrid . Flight time is approximately
50 minutes. La Coruña 's Alvedro Airport is approximately
6 miles from La Coruña city center. There are plenty of taxis
available to take you to the center of town. Alternatively you may
drive from Madrid to La Coruña on a very good highway (approximately
5.5hrs and 378 miles). From Madrid center follow signs for A-6 (toll
is approximately 8 Euros).
Madrid to Santiago de Compostela
(more frequent flights) : As an alternative to flying
into La Coruña , you may fly into the nearby historic city of Santiago
de Compostela , (approximately 50 miles from La Coruña).
Iberia flies there up to seven times daily to Santiago 's Lavacolla
Airport . AirEuropa and Spanair also fly from Madrid to Santiago
.
Once at the Lavacolla Airport you will
need to get to La Coruña
; Up to 20 buses (bus company: Empresa Freire) are available daily
(Eur. 1.45) to take you from Lavacolla Airport to Santiago 's Bus
Station. From Bus Station, take another bus (bus company: Castromil
Eur 5.25 approximately 1 hr) to go to La Coruna .
Otherwise, you can rent a car at Lavacolla
Airport (take highway A-9 direction A Coruña tolls costs
Euro 4.10; if you wish a more scenic route take N-550 which is
free).
On-line Travel Sites: www.travelocity.com, www.expedia.com, www.orbitz.com , www.cheaptickets.com.
Car Rental : you can rent from
all the major US car rental companies (hertz, avis, alamo) or from
spanish companies such as National/Atesa ( www.atesa.com ).
A U.S. Driver's License is sufficient. You can also book your car
rental on-line through any of the major on-line travel sites listed
above. We have in the past rented from www.easyrentacar.com,
an English company and found their rates reasonable. It is highly
recommended that you book in advance. You can pick up your car at
any of the airports here mentioned. NOTE: be sure to check with your
automobile insurance provider and/or your credit card company prior
to deciding on whether you need insurance add-ons (such as collision
damage waiver) that will be offered to you. These add-ons are on
top of the standard rental prices and can significantly add on to
the price of your car rental.
We recommend you not rent a car
larger than a midsize car. The roads are rather narrow, and garages
tight. Garages are “self-service.” Therefore
when exiting a garage, remember to first pay at the machine before
you exit. If in doubt ask the garage attendant.
As in the rest of Europe,
Spaniards drive much faster than americans. Speed limits are posted
in kms (1 mile is approximately 1.6 Kms). To avoid being tailgated,
do not use the left lane except when passing.
